Learning New Ways to Report Quality Measures Together

If you’ve read our blog this year, you know it’s NCQA’s 25th anniversary. In the spirit of the occasion, here’s another example of how we are looking forward: a new approach to HEDIS performance measurement that takes a step toward expanded measurement opportunities and away from costly data collection that requires medical record review.
NCQA is now recruiting health plans, vendors and ACOs to participate in the HEDIS® Learning Collaborative, which will explore innovative ways of reporting quality measures that use data from electronic clinical data systems (ECDS). With the collaborative’s assistance, NCQA seeks to identify the best methods of collecting and aggregating electronic data for provider and practice-level depression care quality measures that were adapted for use in HEDIS.
We hope to answer questions about how plans can use electronic clinical data to report HEDIS measures:
- What guidelines need to be created to best instruct plans on collecting and aggregating electronic clinical data for HEDIS reporting?
- What is the capacity of plans to report these measures right now?
- What are the obstacles to collecting and reporting HEDIS measures using this methodology?
- How can this data collection method be used for other HEDIS measures in the future?
Leveraging technology to improve health care and data reporting is our goal. With the improvement of ECDS, there will be new opportunities for measuring quality at the health plan level. We predict the results of this effort will affect how health plans capture and report data for other HEDIS measures in the future.
