Is quality-based care nearing it’s goal? In The Hill’s latest edition of the Volume to Value series, reporter Sarah Ferris says Medicare’s focus on quality-based care is getting close.
The article highlights the Obama Administration goal that 30 percent of all Medicare payments would be based on value by the end of 2016. A dramatic shift, writes Sarah who goes on to explain this is the first time any administration has set a target on value-based payments.
“We think we’ll reach that goal,” Dr. Patrick Conway, chief medical officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), said at an event hosted by The Hill on Tuesday.

The shift from volume to value is a sea change for the massive health care industry. Quoted in the article is Margaret E.O’Kane, President of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), who says “Hospitals being asked to step up. It’s like turning healthcare systems upside down. You don’t make change on this scale without unintended consequences.”
Sarah also highlights the challenges ahead including measuring and public perceptions.
