Updates to Breast Cancer Screening Age Range for HEDIS MY 2025
October 3, 2024 · NCQA Communications
NCQA is changing the age range for the HEDIS Breast Cancer Screening measure to align with new U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines. Changes will be reflected in the HEDIS MY 2025 Volume 2 Technical Update.
What’s Changing?
The measure will include these changes for MY 2025:
- Expanded the age range to 40–74.
- Added age stratifications for 40–49 and 50–74 years of age, along with a total rate.
Age stratifications will allow trending of screening rates in the 50–74 age range, and highlight performance in the 40–49 age range.
Background and Timeline
- In May 2023, the USPSTF released a draft recommendation expanding the age range for Breast Cancer Screening to 40–74.
- NCQA brought this change to our panels and held an ad-hoc HEDIS public comment in October 2023. Public comment and panels agreed to support the final USPSTF recommendation.
- The recommendation was final in April of this year; its rationale cited an increased incidence of breast cancer in women in their 40s and updated data models.
- NCQA brought the measure changes to our Committee on Performance Measurement for approval.
The HEDIS MY 2025 Technical Update is scheduled for release on March 31, 2025.
