“While the results of the Milbank Primary Care Scorecard are disheartening, it reinforces NCQA’s commitment to quality improvement in primary care, especially as patient and provider needs evolve in a fragmented care ecosystem. We have been at the forefront of Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) recognition for more than 15 years and we understand the keys to effective communication, coordination and patient-centered care. As the health care system explores new models of care delivery and reimbursement, we know that a strong primary care network is critical to the development of value-based care built on a foundation of high-quality care.
To that end, NCQA continues to evaluate and improve our PCMH program to better meet the needs of the current primary care environment, as well as to develop standards for emerging modalities of care, particularly technology enabled care. Since October 2023, we have been piloting a Virtual Care quality improvement program with several organizations representing payors, providers and vendors that will provide a framework for organizations delivering care outside of an office setting. The goal, of course, will be to ensure that all patients receive high-quality, equitable primary care, no matter the mode of delivery. As part of our commitment to equity, our PCMH recognition program also works closely with HRSA, which supports 805 Family Health Centers in their PCMH activities , assuring that these critical primary care providers have access to NCQA’s educational and consultative resources related to high quality primary care.”
